6 Important Aspects of Good Web Design
For a Web Site to gain visitors and perform at its upmost, it is most important that you concentrate on its design in minute detail.
Below are 6 of what I consider to be the most important aspects that must be considered and implemented to make sure that the Site performs well.
- The Navigation Must be Simple and Clear.
Navigation is the menu which is usually found along the top or in the sidebar. Why make it complated? Concentrate on ease of operation and make it simple for visitors to navigate to other pages of the site.
The rule of thumb in this regard, is that your visitors should be able to access the main description of the product or service being sold without having to click on more than 3 links or "levels" For example:
Home Page-Products-Order products.
A set up such as this is also regarded as being of benefit Search Engine Optimization.
I would recommend against having complicated drop down menus with multi tiers or flash based components.....What we know as the KISS Principal....I should not have to explain those initials further!
2. Visitors Should Know Where They Are on The Site
Whenever someone clicks on a domain there is not much time for them to get interested in it, or they will leave.
If the navigation
to the various pages of the web site is set up clearly as described above, visitors will be easily able
to find the information which they are seeking and consequently are liable to stay longer and return often.
3. Forget About Splash Pages
Whats a Splash Page you ask?
They are those attractive pages you can encounter when you first arrive at a website. They often contain a fancy
image describing how to ‘Enter here’ for example.
All they really do is waste time and give potential visitors or customers an option to click nothing more than the back button and be lost forever.
Your best option is to give any potential site visitors a show of up front value or interest and forget about the pretty Splash Page.
4. Use Banner Ads Sparingly
In the early days of the internet, banner ads were a good marketing tool, however as time progressed, web surfers now tend to ignore them...perhaps because they are thinking that a banner ad means that they will have to purchase something if they click on it!
They can brighten up the look of a site but do not expect many clicks from banners.
Use the space that could be taken up with banners to provide your visitors with relevant information or advice giving them the option of clicking on a text link.
This can make Visitors feel they are making their own decision on purchases or not, rather than feeling influenced by having to click on a banner.
5. Be Cautious With The Use of Audio or Avoid it Completely
Use of audio and video on websites is increasing, however unless it is geared perfectly to the type of visitor which you are targetting it can actually serve to drive them away!
If audio is employed it is important that visitors
have control over whether they have to listen or not .
Provision of volume or muting controls will serve this purpose.
6. When in Doubt Revert to the KISS Principal
KEEP IT SIMPLE and your sites can return the results you require
These are the rules that I apply to my sites.
